Andy’s Story: The Heartbeat of Kowhai House.

  • Born with Fryns-Aftimos syndrome, a rare genetic disorder, Andy navigated significant physical and intellectual challenges throughout his life. He also lived with severe epilepsy and other complex symptoms, defying medical predictions to live to 41 years old, far beyond what was expected. Despite these hurdles, Andy possessed an "incredible mind" and a unique ability to connect with the world around him.

One of Andy's most cherished passions was his profound love for milk-collecting tankers. This wasn't just a fleeting interest; it was a central part of his daily life, forming a strict nightly routine around greeting the Fonterra milk tanker. He would diligently draw pictures for the drivers, proudly wear his Fonterra uniform, and eagerly await their visit before he would go to bed. So significant was this routine that Fonterra, a global dairy giant, even adjusted their milk tanker schedule in the Te Rapa district to accommodate Andy's bedtime – a truly extraordinary gesture highlighting the deep bond he forged with the drivers. They gifted him a tricycle with a license plate reading "Andrew, Fonterra's No 1 Fan," and even left notes and treats as his health declined.

Andy's life was a powerful testament to resilience, joy, and the profound impact one individual can have. His parents, Ken and Deirdre, witnessed firsthand the challenges and triumphs of Andy's journey. It was this deep understanding and an overwhelming desire to create a place that truly supported individuals with similar needs to live independently that led them to open Andy's Kowhai House.

At Andy's Kowhai House, we strive to embody Andy's spirit: to see and value every person for who they are, to foster genuine connections, and to ensure that life is lived with dignity, purpose, and joy. Andy's legacy is woven into the very fabric of our home, reminding us daily that every individual deserves a place where they are not just cared for, but truly seen, cherished, and empowered to live their most fulfilling life.
